Uncle Leo’s Organizing Local Craft Beer, Food Truck Rally

NEW GLASGOW – Food trucks and craft breweries will be rolling into New Glasgow next month, offering up some Beer and Bites.

Uncle Leo’s Brewery has teamed up with Tatamagouche Brewing Company and Backstage Brewing – who plan to open in Stellarton in the near future – to plan a craft beer and food truck rally as part of Nova Scotia Craft Beer Week celebrations.

“We would really like to promote craft beer more in this region and we’d like to expose people to the craft beer industry and the culture and these many wonderful beers that are out there that people haven’t had a chance to try…” the Lyons Brook brewery co-owner Rebecca Whiffen said about why they decided to organize this event.

More than 12 events are being held throughout the province for the third craft beer week, taking place May 5 to 13.

Hosted by the Craft Brewers Association of Nova Scotia, it’s boasted as the largest celebration of craft beer in eastern Canada.

And there’s plenty to celebrate.

Whiffen said Nova Scotia has surpassed every province in breweries per capita.

“For a province that really just came on board with this four years ago, it’s stunning,” she said. “When we love something, we love it with gusto.”

Ticket-holders for the event being held at the New Glasgow Farmers Market will have a chance to try samples from all 11 breweries slated to attend, included with the ticket price. Live entertainment is also included in the price.

Food trucks will be outside the licensed area and will have food for purchase, enabling anyone under 19 years old to sample some bites. “Food and beer go very well hand in hand,” Whiffen said, adding both craft breweries and food trucks often use locally sourced ingredients.

She notes Nova Scotia Farmers Markets are also tied closely to these industries as a point of distribution, making it fitting to be held at the local market.

Beer and Bites is scheduled for Thursday, May 11, beginning in the early evening. Tickets will be $30 and will soon be available at the market and online.
